Cathy Robinson on Decorating with Plates

Plates aren't just for the dining table. And that's why we have guest blogger/designer Cathy Robinson on the Blog de Azulina today! With over 20 years of design experience, she has some great ideas to share on how to decorate using plates, bowls and serving pieces.

Plates. Dishes. Ceramic pottery.

No well dressed room should be without at least one piece.

I have always been a plateophile. A girl just can't have enough! Plates, to me, are works of art. They add architectural interest, and they provide color and texture to any space.

Plates obviously are the foundation for wonderful tablescapes. Mixing patterns makes for an unexpected surprise for guests. But plates have so many other uses, too.

I love to hang plates on walls. Different styles and sizes make wonderful groupings.  Matching plates hung in a horizontal line add instant height above a window.

Coordinating plates hung vertically in narrow spaces visually expands the space.

Plates also make wonderful soap dishes in a bath. I love to place plates on bedroom dressers as a perfect spot to spill keys and wallets.

Pairing plates and books together is another fun mix of accessories. Placing two small books in the center of a large plate on a side table is a great contained accent. Adding a small plate to a stack of larger books makes a perfect place to sit a glass and protect the books.

The absolute worst thing you can do with dishes is hide them in a cupboard. Get them out and enjoy them! A chip or crack only adds to their charm.

Place a stack of some of your favorites in the middle of your dining room table adding cups, saucers and or bowls for an instant centerpiece. Incorporating plates into your home's decor lets everyone know an imaginative host resides within!

Renovate is hosting an Azulina Trunk Show at their design studio and store, Renovate, 7413 Westview, Houston, Texas from 3:00 - 7:00 PM. If you live in the area we would love to see you!

Thanks so much Cathy for the great tips. I personally have been dying to create a wall of plates. How cool would that be?

Have a wonderful day!
